Continuing to represent the Presidency in the Council of the European Union at the plenary session of the European Parliament, the Parliamentary State Secretary for EU Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Ms. Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, debated the European Year for Development with Members of the European Parliament.

In her intervention, Ms. Z. Kalniņa-Lukaševica pointed out that the EU has been engaged in development co-operation since 1957 and for a long time has been the largest donor of official development assistance in the world. “This is something we can be proud of,” said the Parliamentary State Secretary. It was also reiterated that the European Year for Development will enrich the debate on the challenges faced in shaping the EU’s future development policies.

The twelve thematic months of the year will put a strong focus on some of the most important topics related to development: education, gender, food security, demography and migration, human rights and governance, to name but a few.
