"I am proud to say that we have made significant progress in the digital field, which is one of the three priorities of the Latvian Presidency. We are close to reaching a compromise on the single EU roaming regulation, while the Network and Information Security Directive to promote cybersecurity and an agreement on data protection regulations are also approaching the finishing line. The Latvian Presidency of the EU Council is coming to a close, but we will continue to work until the last moment to ensure that the Digital Single Market Strategy promotes the global competitiveness of Europe,” affirms Prime Minister Straujuma.
The Prime Minister urged the leaders of the EU Member States to invest more resources in creating the conditions that would contribute to the implementation of innovative and practical information technologies. "If we create a level playing field and secure the conditions for digital development in all EU Member States, the European market will become a knowledge-based economy and will regain its position as a global leader".
To conclude, Laimdota Straujuma expressed her wish that the digital single market would soon become a solution to the economic and social challenges facing the European Union.
On June 17-18, the Digital Assembly is being held at the National Library of Latvia where officials from the EU Member States, representatives of the European Commission, industry experts, the social partners, and technology developers and users can discuss the future of European digital policy and the Digital Single Market Strategy.
