Presenting Latvia’s priorities for its Presidency of the Council of the EU to the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the Latvian Foreign Ministry’s Parliamentary State Secretary for EU Affairs, Ms Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, addressed questions of security and social dialogue as well as the European Citizens’ Initiative and the upcoming intensive work on the regulation of the European Fund for Strategic Investments.

Ms Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica emphasised the role of the EESC as a representative of civil society and the necessity to work together to enhance citizens’ confidence in Europe and increase their involvement in EU processes.

“The social dialogue in Europe is in need of new momentum. We have to emphasise the role of citizens in increasing investment, growth and in carrying out structural reforms”, said the Parliamentary State Secretary.

At the meeting, a discussion also took place on the exploratory opinions of the EESC on the “Europe 2020” strategy, the 2030 framework for climate and energy, and the EU-Central Asia Strategy.

The 504th Plenary Session of the Economic and Social Committee was marked by a special intervention of the former President of Latvia and current President of the Club of Madrid, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, who addressed the questions of solidarity and security in Europe. The members of the EESC thanked Ms. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga for her lifetime contribution in fostering social dialogue with the people of Latvia and Europe.
