On 22 January, 2015, the Minister of Economics of Latvia, Dana Reizniece-Ozola, presented the priorities and programme of the Latvian Presidency in the areas of energy and industrial policy to the Committee of Industry, Research and Energy of the European Parliament.

„The main issue under the Latvian EU Presidency in the energy sector is the development of the resilient Energy Union,” emphasized the Minister. This certainly is a process where Latvia would like to involve all the stakeholders and leaders of the energy sector. Just in a couple of weeks, on 6 February, the defining conference on the Energy Union in Riga will gather together more than 400 professionals. Its main goal is to discuss Energy Union concept to ensure affordable, secure and sustainable energy for our consumers and to launch the so-called "Riga Process" on the establishment of the Energy Union.

The Presidency will also continue to work on completion of the EU internal energy market, implementation of the EU Energy Security Strategy and necessary actions within the 2030 Climate and Energy Framework.

“One of urgent issues to be solved in the near future is development of trust and mutual solidarity among the EU Member States in case of potential supply disruptions. Therefore we are working on discussion on infrastructure to ensure well operating EU wide energy market,” said Dana Reizniece-Ozola.

Talking about industrial policy, the Minister of Economics of Latvia, Dana Reizniece-Ozola, emphasized: „We all have one, clear, shared interest – to promote growth, create jobs and foster competitiveness of the EU. To this effect, industrialization and industrial competitiveness is our common priority.”

The Latvian Presidency focuses on Digital Single Market, digital transformation of the industry as well as on access to finance and implementation of industrial mainstreaming.

“Digital agenda is a well-known concept for a certain period of time and that is why Latvia during its Presidency in the Council is willing to achieve concrete results,” said D.Reizniece-Ozola.

Access to funding has been a real challenge to the EU business in recent years. Latvian Presidency recognises the high priority of this problem and to address that is organising the "Innovative Enterprise Week" on 15-17 June in Riga. To boost growth, jobs and competitiveness through innovation, Latvia has planned a discussion in the Conference on effective use of existing and new financial instruments, facilities and accompanying measures for the companies.
