The Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU highlights the particular importance of cooperation between the EU institutions

On 20 January the Latvian Parliamentary State Secretary for EU Affairs, Ms. Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, presented the priorities of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU to the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (AFCO).

The main focus of the discussions was set on the effective functioning of the EU and improved cooperation between its institutions.

Another topic that was discussed was transparency, implementation and accessibility of the EU legislation for the EU citizens. Ms. Z. Kalniņa-Lukaševica discussed with the Members of the European Parliament on how to improve the options for the citizens to use their democratic rights that would facilitate a faster and better reaction of the EU to their needs and worries. "The European Citizens' Initiative is as a significant step forward in bringing the EU closer to the citizens", said Ms. Z. Kalniņa-Lukaševica and suggested that the initiative will be revisited during the Latvian Presidency of the Council in April 2015. Ms. Z. Kalniņa-Lukaševica emphasised the importance of sound cooperation between the EU institutions in light of the tragic events in Paris.

The AFCO mainly deals with the institutional aspects of the European integration development process and the implementation of the Treaties.
