The 11th session of UN Forum for Forests was held on 4-15 May in New York, USA, and the Forum participants worked on a joint Resolution to facilitate the further development of the Forum for Forests, reaching international agreement until 2030, envisaging the development of the strategic plan and a road map for further work as well as improving involvement of stakeholders and non-governmental organisations in the Forum work. At the Forum for Forests, the European Union was represented by Jānis Dūklavs, Latvian Minister for Agriculture.
Participants of the meeting will also discuss the development of the Forest Europe policy process of the Ministerial Conference on Protection of Forests in Europe as well as criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management. Forest Directors will also talk over conditions for implementation of the EU Forest Strategy to make sure that the forest, as an ecosystem, could successfully be a part in the development of bioeconomy and mitigation of climate changes.
Responsible experts from Latvia will acquaint participants of the meeting with the situation in the forestry sector in Latvia. Visits to enterprises, engaged in forest management, will form an integral part of the event is organised by the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU. The visit to Mazsili nursery garden of the joint stock company Latvijas valsts meži will introduce the meeting participants with the Latvian experience in national forest management. Participants of the meeting will also visit Mežmāja training centre that belongs to the Forest Research Station, where they will learn about current experiences in forest education and science, as well as get acquainted with the summer solstice celebration traditions in Latvia.
Representatives of the most significant forestry-related authorities and organisations, international forestry institutions and organisations and the European Commission will participate in the meeting.
