During ESPON Territorial Cooperation Programme meeting expect to agree on the new programme launch

On 1-2 June 2015, a meeting of the European Spatial Planning Observation Network (ESPON) Monitoring Committee takes place in Jūrmala, during which it is planned to agree on the new ESPON 2020 Territorial Cooperation Programme launch and thematic focus until 2020. The meeting is organised under the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU).

During the meeting, the participants intend to negotiate the implementation of the ESPON 2020 Programme, draft the guidelines and approve the budget for the Communication Strategy and the Technical Assistance. They also plan to discuss the ESPON 2013 Programme implementation and agree on the necessary actions and timetable for the conclusion of the programme.

The Latvian Presidency representatives chair discussions on the implementation of the programme and its thematic focus. The discussions aim to reach an agreement on the direction of the ESPON 2020 Programme in the 2014-2020 fund planning period between the 28 EU Member States and interests of the partner countries.

During the Latvian Presidency, active work on the new ESPON 2020 Territorial Cooperation Programme, the development and approval of mechanisms and the approval of the Multi-Annual Work Programme and the Annual Work Plan will be carried out. 

The ESPON 2020 Programme aims to provide comparable information, evidence, analyses and scenarios on territorial development, and to reveal territorial capital and potential in the regions to boost European competitiveness, territorial cooperation and sustainable and balanced development. The ESPON network countries – the 28 EU Member States and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland can apply for the project funding.

Programme is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for 2014-2020 planning period, with total funding of 41.3 million euros. The programme funding for projects constitutes 38,894,380 euros. The ERDF project co-financing rate is 85%, whereas the remaining 15% are the partner contributions to the programme budget.
