High-level seminar to discuss the draft generic statistical law in Eastern European, Caucasus and Central Asian countries

On 1-3 June, a high-level seminar for the National Statistical Institutions of Eastern European, Caucasian and Central Asian (EECCA) countries* on statistical issues will take place in Riga. The participants will discuss the draft generic statistical law for Eastern European, Caucasian and Central Asian countries which is elaborated by the UN Economic Commission for Europe jointly with the European Free Trade Association and the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat). The aim of this law is to strengthen the legal and institutional framework of national statistical systems and the concept of official statistics in EECCA countries. The law is elaborated in line with the UN Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics, the European Statistics Code of Practice and taking into account the situation of countries in the region.

The seminar will discuss the following topics: topicalities of the quality issues of official statistics; the legal and institutional framework of the national statistical system and the concept of official statistics; requirements for statistical information and institutions collecting data. In the seminar, participants will present the achievements in the implementation of quality management in regional statistical institutions and discuss further cooperation in improving the statistical system in line with the European practice.

The seminar reflects one of the priorities of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union – Engaged Europe promoting the transfer of EU good practise to other countries.

The seminar will be attended by Pieter Everaers, Director of the Directorate of Cooperation in the European Statistical System, International Cooperation and Resources at Eurostat, Andrea Scheller, Director of the Statistical Office at the European Free Trade Association, Lidia Bratanova, Director of the Statistical Division at the UN Economic Commission for Europe, representatives from the European Union statistical institutions, and heads and experts from the statistical institutions from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Mongolia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
