On 26-27 March Latvian Education and Science Minister Mārīte Seile took part in the 4th ASEM Rector’s Conference in Hangzhou, China, during which she addressed rectors from over 100 universities representing 45 European and Asian countries. At the conference, recommendations were put forward for the ASEM Education Ministers' Meeting in April in Riga.

“Latvia highly appreciates the ongoing cooperation in education between Europe and Asia, and the Latvian Presidency will do all it can to strengthen it,” stressed Mārīte Seile in her speech.

Taking into consideration examples of good practice and previous experience, the rectors drew up recommendations on how to strengthen cooperation between universities and the business community by developing labour market skills and promoting youth employment and innovation development with the help of students, businesses and policy-makers.

The rectors submitted the recommendations to Mārīte Seile, so that she in turn could present these to the ministers at the 5th ASEM Education Ministers’ Meeting.

The 5th ASEM Education Ministers’ Meeting organised under the Latvian Presidency will take place one month after the Rector’s Conference. The meeting will bring together Asian and European education ministers who will agree on joint tasks to be achieved over the next two years. They will discuss the future of education in the ASEM countries, investment in promoting skills and employment, as well as the role of new learning technologies in education and in strengthening cooperation between Asia and Europe.

On 23-24 March, Hangzhou hosted the 3rd ASEM Students’ Forum during which students also drew up recommendations on the promotion of university-business cooperation. The recommendations aim to promote the development of student entrepreneurial skills, business start-ups and improving the learning environment by using information and communication technologies. Students from all 51 ASEM countries took part in the forum. The student recommendations were submitted to the rectors and Mārīte Seile to be taken into consideration in the common objectives of the Education Ministers’ meeting in April.
