Andris Freibergs scenography exhibition to open in Moscow

On Friday 27 March, an exhibition of works by the famous Latvian scenographer Andris Freibergs will open at the A. A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum in Moscow.

Honouring the artist on the occasion of his 75th birthday, the Andris Freibergs. Scenography exhibition opened at the Eduards Smiļģis Theatre Museum of the Latvian Academy of Culture in Riga in October 2013. Now it will travel to Moscow. The exhibition features sketches and models of stage settings, as well as photographs and video recordings from theatre and opera productions on which Andris Freibergs has worked.

The Andris Freibergs. Scenography exhibition will be on display in the main building of the museum until 10 May.

Since his debut in 1965, Andris Freibergs has worked on set design for over 200 plays at the Latvian National Opera and leading theatres in Latvia and other countries, such as Lithuania, Estonia, Germany and Russia. As a professor at the Art Academy of Latvia since 1971, he has also brought up several generations of new stage designers.

He has received several awards including the Latvian Order of the Three Stars (2003), Best Set Designer in Estonia (2003), seven Latvian Theatre Awards for Best Set Design and one for Best Costume Design, the highest Italian theatre award Il Premio Ubu (2010), and others. Even when working with classical plays, Andris Freibergs employs modern means of expression to give new meaning to the performances.

The scenohraphy exhibition is organised by the A. A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum in cooperation with the Performing Arts Producer Foundation. It is supported by the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Embassy of Latvia to the Russian Federation and the State Culture Capital Foundation.

The exhibition forms part of the Latvian EU Council Presidency cultural programme, which has contemporaneity, uniqueness and excellence as its core values. The programme consists of about 200 events around the world, and is the most ambitious presentation of Latvia´s culture abroad since the restoration of independence.
