Works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Mieczysław Weinberg, Franz Schubert, Sergey Rachmaninov

Gidon Kremer is known for his musical curiosity and for the prominence in his repertoire of unfamiliar, often modern, composers. In this programme, this is borne out by the presence of Mieczysław (or Moisey) Weinberg, a Russian composer with Jewish and Polish roots, regarded by some as the third-greatest Soviet composer after Shostakovich and Prokofiev. His Sonata for Violin and Piano was the first work to be written after his release from Lubyanka Prison, where he spent almost three months. A variety of emotions are conveyed in the composition, including isolation, disappointment, a longing for freedom and hope.

Gidon Kremer’s guest is the very promising Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov and the Lithuanian cellist Giedrė Dirvanauskaitė.
