Main results of the General Affairs Council

On Tuesday, March 17, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs chaired the meeting of the EU General Affairs Council (GAC) in Brussels. 

The Council prepared the European Council meeting of 19-20 March. The main focus will be on the energy union. Foreign relations such as relations with Russia, the situation in Ukraine, preparations for the Eastern Partnership summit and Libya will be discussed. The economic situation in Europe and the 2015 European semester will also feature on the agenda.

"All these topics are on the EU's strategic agenda and are all interrelated and mutually reinforcing. The crises in our neighbourhood have further highlighted the need for developing a solid European energy union", said Edgars Rinkēvičs, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Latvia and President of the Council.

During lunch ministers discussed with Commission First Vice-President Timmermans how to further improve cooperation between EU institutions. "Our common goal is to further increase the efficiency of our joint work to the benefit of European citizens", said Minister Rinkēvičs after the meeting.
