Edgars Rinkēvičs and Donald Tusk discuss the establishment of an Energy Union and Eastern Partnership issues

17 March 2015

On 16 March in Brussels, the Latvian Foreign Minister, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, to discuss progress in establishing the Energy Union, the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga and the negotiations between the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA) on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership agreement (TTIP).

The Latvian Foreign Minister said he was convinced that, in the context of the emerging Energy Union and the strengthening of energy security, it was essential to complete the establishment of an internal energy market and ensure the diversification of sources of supply. Latvia expects that, during its EU Presidency, further guidelines will be adopted at the March 2015 European Council, which will focus on energy security, the internal energy market and climate diplomacy.

With regard to the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga, Edgars Rinkēvičs hoped that all the EU Member States will ratify the Association Agreements with Eastern Partnership countries and noted that the signing of the Association Agreements is the next step in the Eastern Partnership. In view of this, the Riga Declaration should be sufficiently ambitious but remain realistic, taking an individualised approach towards each of the Eastern Partnership countries.

Edgars Rinkēvičs and Donald Tusk warmly welcomed the progress of the TTIP negotiations on both sides of the Atlantic and agreed that the talks should move forward to address specific issues and prospects. The EU and the USA should continue to do as much as possible to facilitate the negotiations.
