During the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council, the Working Party on Competitiveness and Growth counsellors met in Riga on 12-13 March.

The meeting brought together permanent counsellors responsible for single market and industry issues from Member States. They discussed issues regarding the EU Digital Single Market, digital entrepreneurship, and digital transformation of the EU in order to boost Europe’s global competitiveness.

At the meeting the counsellors held a fruitful discussion on the most important actions which have to be taken to establish a fully-functioning Digital Single Market, and on digital transformation challenges and opportunities for businesses and industry. During the discussion the participants identified priorities for developing the digital potential of Europe. These are to reduce the fragmentation of regulation; integrate digital aspects and solutions in all policy areas and initiatives; promote digital skills and e-literacy; build consumer and business trust and confidence in digital transformation; support the development of innovative solutions and access to finance; and popularise examples of best practice in the EU Member States. To facilitate the discussion, two Latvian enterprises – SIA Tilde and SIA Blumentals Solutions – were invited to share their practical experience of operating in a digital environment.

During their stay in Latvia, the counsellors also had an opportunity to visit enterprises in the Vidzeme Region such as Aerodium Technologies, Husvik, Sigulda Hospital and Nordmed Tour, and Valmiera Glass Group. A visit to Riga Technical University was also organised during which counsellors were able to discuss Latvian achievements in robotics and watch robot demonstrations.

Further discussions on the aforementioned issues will be held at the Informal Meeting of Competitiveness Ministers on 26-27 March in Riga.
