On 26 - 27 February 2015 the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia (LBAS) will organise an international conference “Trade union role in promotion of sustainable growth and quality jobs creation” which will be one of the events organised by the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The conference aims to increase the today's role of trade unions in sustainable economic development and trade union's ability to operate in accordance with the labour market and labour force needs. The conference will address current labour market issues which can be influenced by trade unions - a quality job creation, youth employment and challenges of the free movement of workers. Particular attention in the conference will be paid to the current impact of the European trade union movement and capacity of trade unions which is a prerequisite for the effective performance of the functions of trade unions.

"This conference organised by LBAS will be unique in certain aspects, since it will be the only workers’ forum during the Latvian Presidency. Together with the European trade union representatives we will look for the best solutions to urgent labour market problems. During the conference examples of a good practice will be shared by the trade union representatives from Austria, Sweden and, of course, Latvia. Particularly we thought about the participation of the Italian trade union representatives in the event taking into account that Latvia took over the Presidency of the EU Council from Italy," said the President of LBAS Pēteris Krīgers.

One of the objectives of the Europe 2020, a 10-year strategy for jobs and growth is to achieve 75% employment rate for people of working age from 20 to 64 years. Increasing the quality of jobs and creating new high-quality jobs is one of the tasks on the European Commission's agenda in order to achieve this goal. Therefore the General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Bernadette Ségol, trade union experts, the EUROFOUND and employers’ representatives will be involved during the conference in discussions on quality jobs, quality employment factors and circumstances, the present situation of the implementation of the Europe 2020 employment goals and trade union role in creation of quality jobs. International trade union conference will bring together around 150 participants from the EU Member States' trade unions - ETUC member organisations.

The conference will take place at the Latvian Society House (Latviešu biedrības nams), Merķeļa Street 13, Riga, and the working language will be Latvian with simultaneous interpretation into English and French.

The conference is financed by European Social fund project “Strengthening the administrative capacity of Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia” (Project No. 1DP/1.5.2.2.1./08/IPIA/SIF/001/01).
