ECOFIN to discuss the Investment Plan for Europe

26 January 2015

On January 27, the Minister for Finance, Jānis Reirs, will chair the meeting of the EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) in Brussels. The Latvian Presidency of the EU Council is planning to present the agenda of the Presidency during the meeting.

The Council will have an exchange of views on the Investment Plan for Europe, following the Commission's presentation of its proposal on the European Fund for Strategic Investments. The Fund aims to make available at least €315 billion in private and public investment across the EU over the next three years. It will support in particular strategic investments, such as in broadband and energy networks, as well as SME's.

The Council will discuss a review of economic governance reforms and flexibility under the Stability and Growth Pact.

Ministers will start the preparation for the G20 meeting of Finance Ministers and Governors on 9-10 February 2015 in Istanbul.

The Council will also take note of the presentations of the Latvian Presidency six-month work programme in the ECOFIN area and the Commission's work programme for 2015. Ministers will hold an exchange of views on both programmes.

Under items to be approved without discussion, the Council is expected to add an anti-abuse clause to the EU's parent-subsidiary directive to prevent it being used for corporate tax avoidance.
