On 21 January, in his address to the Industry, Research and Energy Committee of the European Parliament (ITRE), Minister for Transport of Latvia, Anrijs Matīss, acknowledged that Latvia has taken over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union at a time when digital issues have assumed important role on the political agenda.

“We believe that Europe must take action to restore economic growth, encourage investments and create jobs by making full use of the digital opportunities”, told A.Matīss to the ITRE Committee.

Minister admitted that rapidly growing information technologies are providing unprecedented opportunities that have the potential to boost smart, sustainable and inclusive growth for the EU. They also present challenges that need to be addressed in order to properly seize these opportunities.

In order to strengthen the Digital Single Market, Latvian Presidency will pay a particular attention to the Telecoms Single Market package. A.Matīss stated: “We are committed to reach a compromise between the Member States to start negotiations with the European Parliament in the coming months”.

The Latvian Presidency also plans to organise political discussions on the Digital Single Market Strategy in different Council configurations. Minister highlighted the Digital Assembly that will be hosted by the Presidency on 18-19 June in Riga and will contribute to the discussions on the Digital Single Market Strategy among the Member States, EU institutions, NGOs and industry.
