On 12-13 January, a meeting of Directors General of Foreign Ministries took place under the auspices of Latvia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This was an informal meeting and it was chaired by the Latvian Foreign Ministry’s Under Secretary of State for European Affairs, Inga Skujiņa. Participants expressed support for the priorities of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU and confirmed their readiness to cooperate on their realisation. The EU Directors General outlined the issues of national importance in the context of Latvia’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The speakers noted that the recent events in France have brought the issues of security and the fight against terrorism to the top of the European agenda and they expressed both condolences and solidarity to France and its people. EU Directors General reviewed the arrangements for cooperation between institutions and enhancement of the EU's legislative process within the annual and multi-annual framework in the interests of ensuring more efficient functioning of the EU. During the discussion, a number of aspects of institutional issues were identified that require attention and Latvia will be taking these forward during its presidency.

The informal meeting of EU Directors General brought together 80 officials from 28 EU Member States and the aspirant countries including Turkey, Albania, and the former Yugoslav Republics of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro. The General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, the European Commission and the Office of the Chairman of the European Council were also represented.
