#mindpower goes to Spain to reflect on the perpetual movement of the human race

19 June 2015

The #mindpower short film project dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Latvian poets Rainis and Aspazija visits the Spanish film director and producer Toni Marín Vila who reflects on how people are in constant movement.

In the 25th episode of the project, Toni Marín Vila reads an excerpt from Aspazija’s poem Forms from the poetry collection An Armful of Flowers (1911) that speaks about perpetual movement in the physical and spiritual worlds. Toni Marín Vila also recognises that society is always on the move through the interaction between generations and nations.

The ideas of movement and change played a significant part in the creative work of Rainis and Aspazija. Rainis was convinced that every aspect of life should involve movement in order to ensure development and growth. In this respect, he often used the sun as an ideal symbol in view of its constant cycle between day and night. The basic principle underlying several of his plays was growth: “Change upwards and you will overcome destiny!”

The main character of this episode, Toni Marín Vila, is a Spanish film director and producer, as well as a lecturer, who began his career at the Spanish public broadcaster TVE. Among other things, he was responsible for the TV production design at the 1992 Olympic Games held in Barcelona. He has also worked for Televisió de Catalunya and many public and private audiovisual and cultural organisations, in addition to directing and producing several award-winning animation films and documentaries.

Toni comes from Barcelona – the capital of Catalonia and a favourite tourist destination. One of the city's must-see attractions is the Mercat de la Boqueria, a market which featured in the television documentary series In the Belly of the City created in 2013. The second part of this series released this year includes an episode on Riga Central Market – the largest covered food market in Europe – revealing the atmosphere of the market and looking at several products of traditional Latvian cuisine and their producers. The film project forms part of the Latvian EU Council Presidency cultural programme.

The #mindpower (#domasspēks in Latvian) project features a collection of 29 short films in which celebrities from all the EU Member States read excerpts from the works of Rainis and Aspazija in their native language. The project is part of the Presidency cultural programme.

Each week a new video is released on the Presidency's website EU2015.LV. You can also watch the episodes on the Presidency's official Youtube channel and on the project's Facebook page.
