Latvia welcomes the European Commission’s preparedness to provide further financial assistance to Ukraine

08 January 2015

Latvia supports the European Commission’s proposal on the provision of additional macro-financial assistance to Ukraine through implementation of the third Macro-Financial Assistance programme of EUR 1.8 billion. This would take place in 2015 and in early 2016.

The programme supports the stabilization of the economic and financial situation in Ukraine, and has to be approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The Latvian EU Presidency will actively support the adoption and implementation of the third Macro-Financial Assistance programme in order to facilitate the Ukrainian economy’s return to health and growth.

This will be the third Macro-Financial Assistance programme for Ukraine since 2010. In 2014, Ukraine received macro-financial assistance from the EU amounting to EUR 1.36 billion, while the final tranche of EUR 250 million is expected to be made by the spring of 2015.
