EU Ministers for Labour and Social Policy to seek solutions on promoting social dialogue to create high-quality jobs

On 21-22 April, the Minister for Welfare, Uldis Augulis, will chair the informal meeting of the European Union Ministers for Labour and Social Policy in Riga at the National Library of Latvia.

Representatives from the European employees’ and employers’ organisations will also take part in the discussions. The event will focus on the development of social dialogue as a tool for ensuring inclusive growth, increasing employment and provision of high-quality jobs.

On 21 April, starting from 14:00 the opening plenary session of the informal meeting of the Ministers for Labour and Social Policy will take place. The participants will be addressed by Mr Valdis Dombrovskis, the Vice-President of the European Commission for Euro and Social Dialogue, Mr Guy Ryder, the Director-General of the International Labour Organisation, Ms Marita Ulvskog, Acting Chair of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs at the European Parliament, and high-level representatives from European social partners’ organisations.

At 15:45, the Ministers for Labour and Social Policy will discuss the role of social dialogue for inclusive growth providing opportunities for people by raising the level of employment, investing in skills development and reducing poverty. They will also discuss the opportunities to fully use the potential of social dialogue for the implementation of the “Europe 2020” strategy.

On 22 April, two parallel workshops will take place focusing on the current challenges for social dialogue, the experience of Member States and the recent developments in wage setting, as well as the efforts to achieve true and responsible social dialogue. The participants will exchange views on the promotion of social dialogue with an aim to create inclusive labour markets and high-quality jobs.

Press conference with Mr Uldis Augulis, Mr Valdis Dombrovskis and Ms Marianne Thysen, the Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility will take place on 21 April at 18:00. Accredited media are welcome to attend the press conference.
