On 16 April the meeting of the National Drug Coordinators will take place at the Albert Hotel, 33 Dzirnavu iela, Riga, during which the latest trends and actions taken in combating drug addiction in the EU will be discussed.

The meeting will be dedicated to the issue of cannabis in Europe, given that this is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the EU. Its prevalence and distribution present a challenge for Member States to find the most appropriate solutions for combating the negative effects provoked by cannabis use. The meeting will bring together representatives from the EU Member State authorities responsible for drug policy, as well as representatives from the European Commission, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, and Europol.

Presentations on global trends and developments, the situation regarding the fight against drugs in the EU, cannabis policy developments, initiatives by civil society, as well as measures on the prevention and treatment of drug addiction will be on the agenda of the meeting.

Latvia will be represented at the meeting by Parliamentary Secretary Ms Evika Siliņa and Deputy Director of the Sectoral Policy Department Mr Jānis Bekmanis from the Latvian Ministry of the Interior, National Drug Coordinator Ms Agnese Zīle-Veisberga, and representatives from the State Police of Latvia.

The meeting of the EU National Drug Coordinators is organised during each presidency in accordance with the EU Action Plan on Drugs
