Gints Gabrāns solo exhibition opens in Paris

From Monday 30 March, the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry (Société pour l’Encouragement de l’Industrie Nationale, SEIN) in Paris will host the Out of Nowhere solo exhibition by Latvian artist Gints Gabrāns. This exhibition is part of the cultural programme of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The Out of Nowhere exhibition features sculptures that have been created by pouring melted plastic into cold water. This simple physical process results in the spontaneous creation of complex forms and, with this form-shaping process unfolding naturally, the objects reveal organic forms, lines and patterns.

The artist has subsequently used a strategy similar to natural selection or evolution by selecting and merging the best examples created between 2010 and 2013. The Out of Nowhere exhibition makes it possible to comprehend how a simple physical form-shaping process results in complex structures that are determined by chaos and self-organising processes.

The exhibition will be on display from 12:00 to 20:00 each day until 15 April. Entrance is free of charge.

Gints Gabrāns. Out of Nowhere (2010-2014)

Gints Gabrāns has been making use of new technologies and the latest scientific achievements in his creative work, encouraging the viewer to participate in perceptive and cognitive experiments which reveal the fascinating charm of a reality that is invisible to the naked eye. His interests coincide with the activities of the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry in Paris. The Society was founded in 1801 with the goal of enhancing the interaction between art, science and technology and supporting innovation in various fields. Among the members of this prestigious organisation are prominent scientists, politicians and industrialists.

Gints Gabrāns (1970) is a graduate of the Scenography department of the Latvian Academy of Art. He represented Latvia in 2004 at the 26th São Paulo Art Biennial, in 2007 at the 52nd Venice Biennial and in 2011 at the 4th Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art. He has been nominated several times for the Purvītis Prize, the most prestigious Latvian award in visual arts. Out of Nowhere is his third solo exhibition in Paris.

The exhibition forms part of the Latvian EU Council Presidency cultural programme in France. In the coming months it will be followed by several more events – a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris (with the participation of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the State Choir Latvija, conductor Andris Poga and soloists) and a concert by pianist Reinis Zariņš and conductor Ainārs Rubiķis in Strasbourg. This selection of cultural events is designed to introduce the international audience to some of the highlights of Latvian music and art.
