Several EGMIT (Expert Group on Mitigation) meetings take place during the Latvian Presidency. One of these meetings is traditionally organised in the country which holds the EU Presidency.

During the upcoming meeting in Latvia it is planned to discuss the mitigation of climate change in the new comprehensive agreement on tackling climate change after 2020, to be concluded at the end of 2015 in Paris (i.e. the 2015 Agreement).

The task for the Latvian Presidency at this meeting will be to prepare and conduct negotiations on the 2015 Agreement draft versions, as well as on documents concerning the position of the EU in relation to emissions-trading mechanisms, the examination and assessment of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory, agricultural sector (farming and forestry) emissions and removals issues, and the compliance of GHG scientific measurements and other studies with the long-term objectives.

As evidenced by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties, held on 1 – 12 December 2014 in Lima, Peru, emissions-trading mechanisms may play a very significant role in the framework of 2015 Agreement, and the GHG inventory will be essential for the transparency of the process of concluding the 2015 Agreement and for insuring clarity regarding the objectives to be met.

The EGMIT meeting will contribute to forming the EU's position for international negotiations at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference in June 2015 in Bonn (Germany).

A wide range of EU Member States’ representatives as well as representatives of the European Commission will take part in the meeting.
