Latvian movies at Belgian film festivals in February

During the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, special Latvian film screenings are taking place in various European countries, and Latvian movies can be seen at several international film festivals. In February, Latvian films are included in the programmes of two festivals in Belgium.

Anima: The Brussels animation film festival

On 13 – 22 February, the Anima international animation film festival will take place at the Flagey cultural centre in Brussels. In cooperation with the Embassy of Latvia to the Kingdom of Belgium, the festival has prepared a special Latvia Focus programme. It will include animations for children and grown-ups and a special short film programme by the director Signe Baumane. She will visit the festival on 17 – 20 February.

14 February at 21:30 Studio 4
Latvian director Signe Baumane’s short film Love Story is included in the Valentine Day’s programme Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink! This will feature 14 short films with English subtitles. Entrance from 16 years.

16 February at 15:00 Studio 5
Time out with fireflies, bees and other little bugs is a programme for toddlers from the age of three. It will include six puppet animations from Latvia.

17 and 19 February at 20:00 Studio 5
The programme dedicated to the Latvian animator Signe Baumane, Signe Baumane: Life, Love & Sex, will feature short films selected by the author herself. The films will be screened with English subtitles. Entrance from 16 years.

18 February at 20:00 and 20 February at 17:30 Studio 5
A programme featuring young Latvian animators, New Sounds from Latvia, will include eight animation films created by Edmunds Jansons, Reinis Pētersons, Gints Zilbalodis and Vladimir Leschov. English subtitles will be provided. Entrance from 12 years.

18 February at 21:30 Studio 4 and 20 February at 20:00 Studio 5
Signe Baumane’s feature animation film Rocks in My Pockets is included in the festival's International competition. The film will be in English with French and Dutch subtitles. Entrance from 16 years.

Mons International Love Film Festival

On 20 – 27 February, the Mons International Love Film Festival will take place in the city of Mons in south-west Belgium.

The Latvian feature film The Lesson (Izlaiduma gads) is included in the festival's European competition. The screening of the movie will take place on 25 February at 20:00 and on 26 February at 18:30 at the Plaza Art cinema. The director of the film, Andris Gauja, and the leading actress, Inga Alsiņa, will also take part in the festival.

Over the coming months, several more programmes of Latvian cinema will be screened in international film festivals in Belgium and the neighbouring countries of the EU – Ukraine and Belarus.

The participation of Latvian movies at international film festivals is part of the Latvian EU Council Presidency cultural programme which has contemporaneity, uniqueness and excellence as its core values. The selection of films is coordinated by the National Film Centre of Latvia.
