In his speech A.Bērziņš pointed out that the friendship and intense cooperation between Latvia and Germany is an excellent example for the partnership of the two countries. The President stressed that it is the first Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU after ten years of being an EU Member State. During this decade Latvia has proven that it is a purposeful, responsible, and dependable partner.
“The priorities of the Latvian Presidency are economically growing, modern, safe and globally strong European Union. The events, happening in 28 Member States as well as the global events and challenges encourage us to be united, efficient and open for cooperation more than ever,” said the President.
“The logo of the Presidency is a grinding stone – known for centuries as a symbol of diligent work, allusion of the process of grain becoming flour and then bread, when the grinding stone is turned. Well-being and peace is entering people’s homes. Working all together, let us create the home for us all – united, prosperous, and peaceful,” at the end of his speech said A.Bērziņš.
The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Mr Michael Müller, the Head of the Office of the Federal President, Mr David Gill, as well as the State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office, Mr Markus Ederer, also addressed the guests of the event.
The opening of the Presidency continued with the concert by the State Choir Latvija under the lead of conductor Māris Sirmais. The choir performed compositions by different European – German, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Polish and Latvian composers. The audience was captured by the choir's perfect, warm, instrumentally nuanced a capella performance, and the special sound of Latvian choir culture that is a thing of wonder to the rest of the world.
