Latvian contemporary art exhibition at the European Parliament
In 2011, the European Parliament started the tradition of marking each Presidency of the Council of the European Union with a rotating art exhibition in its Altiero Spinelli building in Brussels. This exhibition is organised in honour of the Latvian Presidency.
The art exhibition features the works of such internationally recognised Latvian artists as Līga Purmale, Aleksejs Naumovs, Vineta Kaulača, Otto Zitmanis and Kristaps Ģelzis.
Līga Purmale, known for her Latvian spirit and particular concept of landscape painting, can be considered as one of the founders of Photorealism in Latvian painting. Landscape painter Aleksejs Naumovs is a professor at, and the rector of, the Art Academy of Latvia and his works are found in many galleries and private collections in Latvia, Germany, France and England. Vineta Kaulača's works are also much appreciated in these and other countries.
Otto Zitmanis is widely known for his playful and self-ironic artistic reflections on male – female relationships. Finally, Kristaps Ģelzis has been faithful to Conceptual Art, with particular regard to the development of new technologies and their possible use in conveying his ideas.
The works of art in this exhibition are part of the European Parliament’s Art Collection that reflects the Parliament’s patronage of cultural richness and diversity within the EU. The Collection was started by President Simone Veil in the early 1980s and consists of over 500 paintings, sculptures and other artwork from all EU Member States and beyond.
