After the concert: reception and Latvian folk dance evening with dancer and choreographer Krišjānis Sants and Latvian folklore group Dzērves.

The kokle is a traditional Latvian instrument and many different stories exist regarding its origins. The oldest museum piece dates back to 1710, but several sources mention more ancient roots. When this vibrant, young woman gets her hands on the ancient Latvian instrument, it is transformed and brought to life in a contemporary, energising and unique soundscape. A chance to experience musical environments, the sound of nature, textured city lights and emotional close-ups.

The trio – Laima Jansone, Artis Orubs and Andris Grunte – first appeared on stage at the Rīgas Ritmi Festival in 2012, when the Latvian kokle player Laima Jansone performed together with percussionist Artis Orubs and bassist Andris Grunte. The trio revealed a new melodic synthesis, one that was unique and unprecedented in jazz music. The trio continues to impress with its unique synthesis of modern and traditional music, in combination with the extraordinary stage layout and the visual presence of other musicians. The programme contains original pieces influenced by both jazz and folk.
