In #mindpower, Slovenian hip hop artist Zlatko performs a 100-year-old poem by Aspazija

05 February 2015

The literary works of Latvian poets Rainis and Aspazija have been set to music before, but can these poems from over 100 years ago be used in hip hop? The Slovenian rapper Zlatko gives the answer in the latest #mindpower episode.

Zlatko (Zlatan Čordič) is a well-known Slovenian hip-hop artist. Zlatko has released seven music albums and is one of the most followed celebrities on social media in Slovenia. In his songs, he speaks about political and social issues and also highlights the importance of self-respect and respect for other people. Although he talks about serious issues in his songs, the overall mood of his music is very positive. He is extremely popular among a younger audience and is very often invited to schools.

In the 5th episode of the #mindpower series, Zlatko performs the poem My Thoughts from Aspazija’s poetry collection Twilight of the Soul (1904). In this collection, she talks philosophically about opposites such as death vs. life, present vs. past or ideal vs. reality, and about the loneliness of the creative personality.

The episode was created in cooperation with the Latvian multi-instrumentalist Rick Feds (Rihards Fedotovs). He took part in the film shooting in Latvia where he accompanied the live performance of Aspazija (played by Eva Ikstena-Strapcāne) and also prepared the beat that was later used by Zlatko while recording in Slovenia.

The #mindpower (#domasspēks in Latvian) project is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Latvian poets Rainis and Aspazija. It features a collection of 29 short films in which celebrities from all the EU Member States read excerpts from the works of Rainis and Aspazija in their native language and clothe them in images of their culture. Each week a new video is released on the Presidency’s website EU2015.LV.

You can also watch the episodes on the Presidency’s official Youtube channel and on the project’s Facebook page.
