On 5 March, a photo exhibition entitled Latvia. Paintings from Above by hot-air balloon pilot Gunārs Dukšte will be unveiled at the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg. The exhibition is part of the cultural programme of the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council.

Gunārs Dukšte is a Latvian ballooning pioneer and hot-air balloon pilot with over 20 years of experience. He holds several Latvian records for flights in different categories – altitude, distance and duration. Visual notes – in the form of bird's-eye view photographs – have been accumulating over many years in Gunārs’ Pilot’s diary next to precise technical notes on each flight.

The exhibition will present more than 30 photographic images taken by him of Latvian landscapes in all four seasons.

The author himself says that his photographs are not the usual views of Latvian landscapes, and that less traditional photos will be seen in the exhibition: "Most of the photographs in this collection differ from traditional aerial photography. Don’t spend too much time trying to spot popular tourist and historical sites, or even classic “picture perfect” postcard scenes! They will be my sensations and timid impressions of Latvia. Small paintings!”

The exhibition will take place from 5 – 31 March at the Court of Justice of the European Union, Boulevard Konrad Adenauer, Kirchberg, L-2925 Luxembourg.

The Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union is organising the exhibition together with the EU Court of Justice and the Latvian Embassy in Belgium and Luxembourg.

The exhibition is included in the cultural programme of the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council, whose main values are contemporaneity, uniqueness and excellence. The programme consists of almost 200 events worldwide, and is the largest presentation of Latvian cultural excellence abroad since the country regained its independence.
