#mindpower: a portrait of Rainis in Maltese limestone

12 June 2015

The #mindpower project dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Latvian poets Rainis and Aspazija visits two Maltese sculptors – father and son Alfred and Aaron Camilleri Cauchi. In the short film, they create a portrait of Rainis on a Maltese limestone rock.

Alfred Camilleri Cauchi is a notable Maltese sculptor following in the footsteps of his father, who was also an artist. After his studies in Scotland, Alfred returned to Malta and started working on church decorations and statues. He also came up with the idea of decorating Maltese village squares with monuments in honour of the brave soldiers who died during the Second World War.

In his sculptures he uses traditional Maltese papier-mâché techniques as well as wood, bronze, marble, limestone and even fibreglass. His works can be seen worldwide – from Australia and the USA to Libya and Norway.

Alfred’s son Aaron is continuing the family's artistic line. He is a sculptor who also specialises in restoration and conservation. His compositions – mainly religious sculptures – are characterised by a pronounced academic style and original colours. In 2008, he took part in the 6th European Sacred Art Exhibition in Italy where his statue was chosen as the best work at the exhibition and received a prize from the European Parliament.

In the 23rd episode of the #mindpower project, the Maltese sculptors Alfred and Aaron Camilleri Cauchi read an aphorism written by Rainis about the need to honour each and every person, since only together do individuals form humanity.

The idea of unity is also fundamental to the 8th Nordic – Baltic Choral Festival that will take place in Riga on 25-28 June: “Only together do waves become the sea. Only together do trees become a forest. Starlings do not fly alone; one raindrop is not a downpour. It is only by singing together that we can give life and soul to a song.”

The #mindpower (#domasspēks in Latvian) project features a collection of 29 short films in which celebrities from all the EU Member States read excerpts from the works of Rainis and Aspazija in their native language. The project is part of the Presidency cultural programme.

Each week a new video is released on the Presidency's website EU2015.LV. You can also watch the episodes on the Presidency's official Youtube channel and on the project's Facebook page.
