Common Security and Defence Policy Orientation Course to take place in Brussels

20 March 2015

On 23-27 March in Brussels, the Latvian Ministry of Defence and the European Security and Defence College are organising the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Orientation Course to develop and promote a better understanding of the CSDP as an essential part of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).

The orientation course will provide an overview of the European Security Strategy and CSDP structures and procedures, while also providing perspectives on civil-military cooperation and the strengthening of partnerships. Participants will have an opportunity to network and exchange ideas, including with professionals working in the field of CSDP.

The orientation course will bring together a broad audience of more than 70 participants from the EU Member States and partner countries, including Canada, Chile, Georgia, Mexico, Switzerland, Turkey, Thailand and the USA, and from international organisations such as NATO and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Although for the last two years the Steering Group at the European Security and Defence College has no longer been headed by the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, but by a person designated by the High Representative, the tradition has remained for the EU Presidency country to take an active part in the activities of the European Security and Defence College. Latvia will therefore be involved in the preparations for the course through working on the content and inviting speakers. Discussions regarding the course will be chaired by the Course Director, Sarmīte Kovaļevska.

This is the first time that Latvia has been involved in organising the CSDP Orientation Course, although it has, together with Estonia and Lithuania, already organised some of the high-level course modules of the European Security and Defence College at the Baltic Defence College. One of these modules “CFSP in Action” will take place on 13-17 April in Riga.

Since its establishment in 2005, the European Security and Defence College has provided joint training for civilian and military personnel at EU level and has enhanced professional relations and cooperation in the field of CSDP.

The European Security and Defence College acts as a network for the institutes, academies, universities and other institutions in the EU dealing with security and defence policy issues, and provides strategic-level training in the field of European Security and Defence Policy.
