On 3-4 May, World Press Freedom Day 2015 - one of the largest events in the world coordinated by UNESCO - will take place in Riga. This Day was officially proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 and since then has taken place every year in a different country of the world. This year it will take place in Latvia.

UNESCO has approved the key element of the World Press Freedom Day conference in Latvia: freedom of expression in the Digital Age. The focus of the conference will be on quality investigative journalism and editorial independence, the safety of journalists, women and their role in the media environment, and innovative journalism. Latvia as the presiding country believes that freedom of expression is the basis of meaningful dialogue and democratic society, and in a long-term, increasing competitiveness and sustainable development.

The conference will be followed by the World Press Freedom Prize award ceremony that will honour a person, organisation or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence of press freedom in the face of danger. The Director-General of UNESCO has already announced her attendance at the event.
