Informal Meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs (Gymnich)
Informal meetings of ministersA two-day informal meeting of European Union Foreign Ministers is organized during each presidency. The meeting will be hosted by the Latvian Presidency and will take place at the National Library of Latvia on the 6th and 7th of March 2015. It will include Foreign Ministers from all the European Union member states and it will be chaired by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini. The aim of the meeting is to engage in a strategic discussion on the European Union's foreign and security policy goals and instruments.
The ministers will discuss the situation in Libya, as well as the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and European Union relations with Russia taking into account the latest developments. Likewise, preparations for the Eastern Partnership Summit will be considered. The ministers will also reflect on the Strategic Review, which is designed to contribute to the formulation of a new EU security and foreign policy strategy.
Another session, will review the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP). There will also be a separate session with foreign ministers from EU candidate countries during which developments in the neighbourhood will be discussed.
As is customary, the Gymnich meeting will conclude with a press conference by the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs.
The informal Gymnich meetings are a long-standing tradition for ministers of the European Union. Gymnich meetings do not adopt any formal conclusions or issue official statements. They provide an opportunity for ministers to discuss issues in an informal atmosphere during two-days of structured meetings and social events.
