Several EGA (Expert Group on Adaptation) meetings take place during the Latvian Presidency. One of these meetings is traditionally organised in the country which holds the EU Presidency.

During the upcoming meeting in Latvia it is planned to discuss the role of adaptation to climate change in the new comprehensive agreement on tackling climate change after 2020, to be concluded at the end of 2015 in Paris (i.e. the 2015 Agreement).

The task for the Latvian Presidency at this meeting will be to prepare and conduct negotiations on the 2015 Agreement draft versions, as well as on documents concerning the position of the EU in relation to adaptation to climate change issues.

As evidenced by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties, held on 1 – 12 December 2014 in Lima, Peru, the developing countries attach importance to the issue of adaptation to climate change, equivalent to that of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction, in the context of the 2015 agreement.

The meeting will contribute to forming the EU position for international negotiations at the meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bonn (Germany) in June 2015.

A wide range of EU Member States’ representatives as well as representatives of the European Commission will take part in the meeting.
