Ziel der Konferenz ist es, die Umsetzung der Strategie für Biodiversität der Europäischen Union umfassend zu diskutieren.

Die Hauptaufgabe der lettischen Ratspräsidentschaft in Bezug auf die Konferenz ist es, zu der Erarbeitung des Zwischenberichts zur Biodiversitätsstrategie beizutragen.

Um Erfahrungen auszutauschen und Empfehlungen für zukünftige Maßnahmen gemeinsam zu entwickeln, bringt die Konferenz Vertreter staatlicher und nichtstaatlicher Sektoren sowie Vertreter der Organisationen von Landnutzern und Grundbesitzern aus allen EU-Mitgliedsstaaten zusammen.

Die Konferenz wird vom Ministerium für Umweltschutz und regionale Entwicklung der Republik Lettland in Zusammenarbeit mit der Europäischen Kommission, dem Lettischen Naturfonds und dem Europäischen Umweltbüro organisiert. Der Lettische Naturfonds und das Europäische Umweltbüro implementieren das Projekt, das die aktive Teilnahme von Nichtregierungsorganisationen an der Konferenz ermöglicht, in dem sie Unterstützung seitens des vom lettischen Staat finanzierten Projekts zur Unterstützung öffentlicher Teilhabe während der EU-Ratspräsidenschaft Lettlands erhalten.
