La conférence vise à examiner en détail la mise en œuvre de la stratégie de l'UE pour la biodiversité.

La principale tâche de la Présidence lettone dans l’organisation de cette conférence consiste à contribuer à la rédaction du rapport d’évaluation à mi-parcours de la stratégie pour la biodiversité.

La conférence réunira des représentants des secteurs gouvernementaux et non gouvernementaux ainsi que d’organisations d’exploitants des terres et de propriétaires fonciers de tous les États membres de l’UE, qui partageront leurs expériences et élaboreront ensemble des recommandations pour les actions à mener à l’avenir.

La conférence sera organisée par le ministère letton de la protection de l’environnement et du développement régional, en collaboration avec la Commission européenne, le Fonds letton pour la nature et le Bureau européen de l’environnement. Le Fonds letton pour la nature et le Bureau européen de l’environnement mettent en œuvre un projet qui permet à des organisations non gouvernementales de participer activement à la conférence grâce au soutien du programme intitulé « Soutenir la participation des ONG à la mise en œuvre des priorités de la Présidence du Conseil de l’UE », qui bénéficie d'un soutien au titre du budget de l’État letton.
