Art Exhibition "Visionary Structures. From Johansons to Johansons"
Last updated on 11 February 2015, 18.22
The exhibition offers an insight into Latvia’s avant-garde art in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The first generation of Latvian avant-garde artists is represented by globally renowned artists, Gustavs Klucis (1895–1938) and Kārlis Johansons (1890–1929). The artistic ideas of the 1970s are demonstrated by the works of Valdis Celms (1943), Jānis Krievs (1942), and Artūrs Riņķis (1942). Finally, the complex synthesis of art, technology and science is seen in the works of the most exciting contemporary artists, Gints Gabrāns (1970) and Voldemārs Johansons (1980).
Alongside the exhibition in Brussels, a special-edition double DVD set of 'Klucis. The Deconstruction of an Artist' will be released for all those interested in art, history and documentary cinema. The release also contains reproductions of little-known sketches, posters and photo collages by Gustavs Klucis, as well as essays by international art experts.
The exhibition is organised by the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art in collaboration with the Latvian National Museum of Art and Riga 2014 European Capital of Culture.
The opening of the exhibition will take place on 12 February.
