“World Cities. Live Paintings” art project and exhibition in Hong Kong

From 1 to 5 March, Hong Kong will host the World Cities. Live Paintings art project by the Art Academy of Latvia (AAL). During this event, the Rector of the AAL, Aleksejs Naumovs, and Pro-rector Kristaps Zariņš will be painting urban landscapes en plein air on large-scale canvases. The works created will then be displayed at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU) School of Design.

On Monday 2 March, the World Cities. Live Paintings exhibition will be opened by the Ambassador of Latvia to China, Ingrīda Levrence, the HKPU President, Timothy W. Tong, and the Dean of the School of Design, Cees de Bont. The exhibition will remain on display until 12 March.

The World Cities. Live Paintings exhibition is constantly growing as the artists add new works from art campaigns and en plein air painting in new locations. The exhibited works reflect impressions gained in the world’s metropolises and culturally rich European cities. The project has been created and showcased in Delhi, Washington, Miami and other places.

The exhibition will feature works created en plein air by both artists at the Hong Kong Museum of Art last year, as well as new large-scale canvases created outdoors that capture the urban environment of Hong Kong.

During their visit to Hong Kong, the Rector and Pro-rector will sign a cooperation agreement between the Art Academy of Latvia and the HKPU School of Design to establish cooperation between academic staff and students from both schools in the areas of exchanging experience, staging exhibitions, research, developing academic programmes and other activities promoting art in higher education.

The World Cities. Live Paintings art project is part of the Latvian EU Council Presidency cultural programme which has contemporaneity, excellence and uniqueness as its core values. The programme presents Latvia as a reliable partner in cooperation, a cultural tourism destination and a source of inspiration, top-class professionalism and cultural achievement. The programme features around 200 events.
