Telecom ministers met to informally discuss Latvian Presidency’s approach on TSM

22 January 2015

On 21 January an informal ministerial dinner on Telecoms Single Market (TSM) regulation proposal ("Telecom package") was organized by Günther Oettinger, EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society in cooperation with Anrijs Matīss, Minister for Transport and Communications of Latvia.

Minister A.Matīss presented the Latvian Presidency`s Roadmap on TSM to the ministers, which outlines the further envisaged steps on the package. Presidency proposed to concentrate further discussions on issues of roaming and net neutrality. On roaming, Latvian Presidency proposed a new model “roam like at home plus (RLAH+)” and on net neutrality “principle based” approach.

The dinner was of an informal character and it gave opportunity to the ministers and other high-level officials to exchange their views on further steps on the TSM proposal and in broader context of the upcoming Digital Single Market Strategy.

Minister also noted, that if necessary, the Presidency in cooperation with the Commission will return to this issue on ministerial level in March.

Minister A.Matīss noted  a general support for the Presidency’s approach, and based on support and trust received, the Presidency intends to continue work at the technical level until the end of February in order to prepare the Council’s position and mandate for negotiations with the European Parliament.
