The conference entitled “Insolvency law in Europe: current trends and future perspectives” will take place in Jūrmala on 23-24 April. It will bring together foreign experts, European and national lawmakers, government representatives and other interested parties to share their experiences of different national approaches to insolvency issues and to discuss the future from a European perspective.

The conference will focus on reforms of European insolvency law and opportunities to overcome the challenges related to the rapidly changing economic situation in Europe. The event will be opened by the Latvian Minister for Justice, Dzintars Rasnačs, and the European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers, and Gender Equality, Věra Jourová.

Dzintars Rasnačs emphasised that viable businesses are the key to economic growth and commended the work done by the European Union on the amended insolvency regulation which, above all, provides a new approach to help businesses restructure instead of solely focusing on effective liquidation.

According to the Minister, the reform is only the first step towards an improved business environment. It is also important to be able to assess whether the proposed actions are effective. Therefore, the sharing of best practises and experience is essential for further improving the business environment in Europe.

The conference will address problems of excessive debt in relation to consumer insolvency. The guest experts will outline other issues related to insolvency, such as the liability of board members, requirements relating to avoidance, the legal framework for insolvency process administrators and its compatibility with the European Union framework, and other key issues.
