On 6-8 May 2015, a high-level conference under the URBACT programme (Urbact City Festival) will take place in Riga. It will be devoted to integrated sustainable urban development issues and will support cities in the development and implementation of their integrated urban strategies. The conference is organised under the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

On 6 May, the presentation of the results of the URBACT II 2007-2013 Urban Development Programme will provide an opportunity for the exchange of experience and transfer of best practice. Speeches will be given by representatives from Estonia, Italy, Lithuania, Finland, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.  Master classes will then focus on urban policy instruments and their applicability for initiating real activities that promote growth in urban development. The participants will also share information on various strategies for preserving landscape values.

On 7 May, the participants will learn about current marketing innovation trends in territorial development and the potential of electric vehicles, and share their experience of business start-up challenges in urban policy.

On 8 May, the participants will be invited to discuss equality and social issues, and attracting investment for urban development. In addition, information will be given about the new URBACT III Interregional Cooperation Programme for the 2014-2020 planning period, including the first call for the creation of Action Planning Networks launched in 2015.

The URBACT City Festival will give participants the opportunity to meet over 400 of their peers working in the field of sustainable urban development, namely practitioners, policy-makers and locally-elected representatives involved in urban development issues at local, regional, national and EU level. The conference will be attended by representatives from a number of cities involved (or not) in URBACT, project partners and experts, national authorities, EU institutions, research institutions, civil society organisations and the managing authorities of operational programmes under the European Structural and Investment Funds.
